The fascinating origins of Mother's Day
A bit of history
An ancestral tradition
Mother's Day is a day dedicated to celebrating and paying tribute to those without whom we wouldn't be here: our mothers. But where does this particular tradition come from? It is an ancient custom that has crossed the ages, adapting and transforming to become this special day we know today.

The ancient roots of the celebration
The celebration of mothers dates back to Antiquity. The ancient Greeks paid tribute to Rhea, the mother of the divinities, embodying the fertility and generosity of the nurturing earth. This tradition has continued through the centuries.
In France, the modern initiative of this celebration is attributed to the village of Artas in Isère, where, in 1906, an official ceremony honored mothers of large families.
The modern establishment
The worldwide formalization intensified at the beginning of the 20th century. In the United States, Anna Jarvis, grieving the loss of her mother, initiated a movement for official recognition of a day dedicated to mothers, leading in 1914 to the establishment of a national Mother's Day.
Europe followed shortly after, blending this tradition with its own history and local customs.
Mother's Day and the floral world
The celebration of Mother's Day has a special relationship with the floral world. Since the dawn of time, flowers have been used to express feelings and emotions where words sometimes fall short.
The act of offering flowers to one's mother is both a gesture of recognition and a celebration of life. Each bouquet tells a story, that of a unique relationship.
The carnation, traditionally associated with this day in many countries, symbolizes love and admiration.
